Discovery Early Learning & Care is a non-profit organization provincially recognized for its outstanding quality early learning and care programs. Throughout the organization the foundations of “How does Learning Happen: belonging, well-being, engagement and expression” are the basis for visioning, planning, work and play. They are fundamental in the importance of building authentic relationships among children, families, staff and Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors is currently looking for New Board Members to join their team! If you are interested in being a Director of a new and exciting venture, a non-profit organization that will continue to be a leader in the early learning and care sector this invitation is for you!

Individuals who are committed to supporting children, families and the community through quality early learning programs, who are interested in making a commitment of time and engagement are being invited to apply for the Board of Directors.

The Board will oversee the governance and operations of the new organization. There will be 11 members who will bring community and organizational knowledge and experience. They will include consumers of the service as well as interested individuals.

Discovery Early Learning and Care is a non-profit organization, who’s Board of Directors is made up of parent and community volunteers. The Board is responsible for the over-all direction of the organization by actively managing the decision making process of the agency

What is the purpose of the Board of Directors?

The Board is legally responsible for the governance of DELC. This includes setting the mission, vision values, and a strategic plan that will direct the organization. The board approves funding, strategies, programs, activities and spending. The Board hires and evaluates the Executive Director and works in partnership with them to ensure the organizations legal obligations are met.

What does the Board do?

The Board has regular monthly meetings to review organizational outcomes in the areas of: finances/ budget, enrolment, human resources, programs, and strategic planning. Annually the Board evaluates its own performance, program outcomes, The Executive Director Role and parent satisfaction. After discussion and review of these areas, the Board is responsible for making modifications and changes to these topics on an annual basis at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Who is on the Board?

Board members include parents and persons who want to further the interests of DELC. Members are Ontario citizens, at least 18 years old and who are not employed by the organization. The board has developed a matrix that demonstrates what skills, knowledge and experience will be needed to ensure excellence in governance. Directors bring individual skills, experience and knowledge that is needed to benefit the agency. The Board itself may recruit individuals to be Directors and these individuals are elected by the full membership at the AGM.

What is the time commitment?

The Board meets on a monthly basis from Sept to June. There is also a 2 day retreat each year for planning and training development. An additional evening of training may held annually for members that may requires further preparation. Members are expected to review documents and prepare each month for meetings. Each member is expected to sit on one committee; committees will meet approximately 4 times per year, or as required.

Will there be training?

Yes, sufficient training will be provided.
